Once there was a boy who spent every Halloween night staring into jack-o-lanterns. Their flickering faces hummed to him, low and strange, a melody no one else could hear. Through the flames he traveled from pumpkin to pumpkin, peering out through their carved faces, seeing the world through their twisted eyes and hearing the songs they sang. When he grew up, he followed those songs across the world, gathering the notes of evil music one by one from crypts, catacombs, candlelit cathedrals and the darkened porches of a million Halloween nights. He’s still collecting. So the next time you stare into a jack-o-lantern, look closely. He might be staring back.
