Was “Skeleton Sam” written for Hocus Pocus 2?
In 2019 a room of professional pop songwriters, the kind of people who write records for Beyoncé and Rihanna and Katy Perry, got annoyed at the same problem every October: the Halloween canon has about four songs in it, and the newest one is from 1993. “Monster Mash” is 1962. “Thriller” is 1982. Every party, every store, every haunted house, the same four records on a loop. So they made some new ones, in a week, mostly as a joke, and invented a skeleton to hang one of them on.

The film came out in September 2022. “Skeleton Sam” became the eighth most Shazamed song in the United States, which is what happens when a few million people hear something over an opening title card and immediately hold up their phones.
It has not stopped. The song has since passed 22 million streams in the United States alone, and Halloween day 2025 was 11.5 times bigger than Halloween day 2019. Seven Halloweens in a row, on a song made in a week to solve a problem at a party.
Who is Skeleton Sam?
Sam was supposed to be a one-off. He was not.
He came back as a character, then as a narrator, then as the protagonist of an entire album, 2023’s V, whose plot is the rescue of his lost love Seraphina. Somewhere along the way he acquired a legal name, Samuel St. Skelevoie, and an origin in Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans.
On October 1, 2026 he gets his own show. Skeleton Sam’s Deadtime Stories is the eighth LVCRFT album, twenty-seven tracks built like a late-night horror broadcast, and Sam hosts it, voiced by Roger L. Jackson, who has been Ghostface since 1996.
